Feeling burnt out? Try

Creating with Care

Are you an aspiring, current, or former writer/musician/performer/visual artist using your work to process and/or represent your lived experiences? Whether you are creating pieces for a public showing or private contemplation, this is the service for you! In these weekly/monthly sessions, we will

  • Address the holistic effects of your process on the sustainability of your practice.
Do you emotionally burn out after creating work around a certain subject or timeline? How does your body react to themes that arise in what you are making? How long does it take you to recover from this? What kind of preventative care measures could you take before starting on a project that will bring up activating emotions? Are there certain materials or modalities that are more soothing than others?

  • Collaboratively define the goals and objectives of your work.
Are you providing visibility of a marginalized perspective to a larger audience? Does it matter to you if those who see your work understand what it means to you? Do you want to create solely for the eyes of yourself, your spouse, your community, your family? Does the end result of your creative practice matter to you? What message are you sending and is it being received effectively? Are there technical or practical aspects of your work that you want to refine?

  • Manage the time and energy that you are in control of.
Do you have a day or night job that you struggle to plan around? If you are a parent, is there a way that being with your child could feed rather than drain your creativity? If you struggle with chronic fatigue or pain, how can you allow yourself to rest rather than resist care? What time of day/week/season are you most inspired? Are you tired of the hustle/bootstraps mentality and want to make a realistic plan with the resources you have?

  • Specify the support that I can provide you.
Do you need someone to vent to about the systemic issues you navigate as a working artist? Would you appreciate a technical critique on the effectiveness of your work in relation to your goals and objectives? What validation and/or affirmation have you been requesting and not receiving? Do you need informal prompts with intentional limitations to address the emotions you are trying to access through your work? Would having a witness to hold space for your pain when the subject matter of your art becomes profound be helpful?
